Heartwood Supportive Housing
Description
Heartwood Commons is a progressive design-build project with CIDA and Bremik Construction, that transforms a former hotel into a permanent supportive housing community. The three-story building includes 54 studio apartments organized across two wings and served by interior double-loaded corridors, providing a safe, dignified home for high-needs residents, including individuals and seniors.
Following acquisition, the project began with converting hotel rooms into code-compliant studio apartments, transitioning the building from R-1 to R-2 occupancy and reimagining interior spaces to better support long-term residents and on-site service providers. The current phase of work focuses on comprehensive upgrades to the building envelope, including the roof, walls, and windows, along with improvements to plumbing, HVAC systems, and accessibility throughout the building.
Additional tenant improvements to common areas will enhance functionality, improve workflows for service providers, and create more comfortable, welcoming spaces for residents. Looking ahead, the Housing Authority of Washington County plans to pursue additional funding to strengthen climate resilience through the integration of solar panels and battery storage, ensuring continued operation of critical systems such as elevators and corridor lighting during power outages.
