The Peterson Machinery project in Hillsboro won 3rd place for the DJC TopProjects 2019 for Industrial/Manufacturing. This project was completed by CIDA, Robert Evans Company, and AAI Engineering.
About the Project
Peterson had outgrown its old home and wanted to relocate its operations to better meet the company’s programmatic and business needs. Its project team helped it find and develop its 22-plus-acre campus along Highway 26 between Cornelius Pass and Century, which was selected for its size, layout and access. Its presence along a major highway was an additional bonus that allowed Peterson to showcase its business in a way that was not feasible from its former location on Columbia Boulevard.
Completed last May, the campus includes more than 214,000 square feet of building area in six pre-engineered steel buildings. This building type lends itself to the large structural bays needed to accommodate equipment while maintaining the structural capabilities to support multiple cranes throughout the shop spaces. The structures and materials also allow for easier ongoing maintenance for Peterson’s use.
One key challenge with the Peterson campus was some of the programmed buildings on the site. One example is the wash bay. The high use of the wash bay makes it a critical component on the site, even though it is the smallest building footprint on the campus, and its central location is necessary to serve the other shops on the site with minimal circulation time.
To make the site successful for Peterson, a significant amount of grading work was needed. The need for a temporary stockpile on building pads to stabilize the soils created another need — a large amount of fill material.
The team was able to connect with another development that was removing a large volume of material for a subterranean parking garage, which helped offset some of the fill stabilization materials needed on the site.
