About Multnomah County
Multnomah County was established in 1854 from parts of Washington County and Clackamas County. It was created because Portland residents had difficulty traveling to Hillsboro, the county seat of Washington County. The county was named after the Multnomah Indian who originally lived on Sauvie Island in the Columbia River. The Port of Portland was established in 1891. It exports more wheat than any other American port.
