TSA Veteran’s & Family Center
Description
The Farmington Veterans & Family Center provides transitional housing and support services to homeless and at risk individuals and families in a suburban residential environment. CIDA provided design for conversion of an existing senior living apartment building into a new expanded home for the program. The original downtown Portland location focused on individuals whereas the new suburban environment and facility layout allowed the program to incorporate veterans with families. The site’s suburban location allows the facility to include common open space for use by residents. This space includes areas for youth activities and interaction. A community garden provides residents with activities that focus on ownership and community.
The remodel included revisions to unit layouts in order to expand the veterans program. Additional modification included a new central office location that provided for both property security as well as new spaces for case managers. An exterior facelift and repair of water intrusion completed the original scope of work. As part of CIDA’s scope we prioritized improvements with the owner, end user and contractor to address critical program requirements and necessary upgrades to meet the original funding and schedule constraints. Ongoing services include assistance with additional site improvements for bike storage and increased accessibility.
