Cannon Beach Elementary Rejuvenation

February 28, 2023 by

Description

The Cannon Beach Elementary Rejuvenation Project is an adaptive re-use project aimed at reactivating the former Cannon Beach Elementary School and NeCus Park site for use by Cannon Beach visitors and residents, businesses, and the Clatsop Nehalem Confederated Tribe for a variety of educational and tourism-related interests. The project aims to educate Cannon Beach residents and visitors of the history and cultural significance of the Clatsop Nehalem Tribe. Following Beaver Street, visitors will be introduced to the statue of the Welcoming Lady located on the Southeast Plaza. Inside, the project looks to further tell the story of the Clatsop Nehalem Tribe displaying historic tribal images, artifacts, and history. The building also provides a large open space that can provide recreational gym space or host a multitude of event types to the public. Furthermore, it adapts the former classrooms into new educational spaces available for everyone to use.

The rejuvenation project will also include many outdoor activities and amenities. Visitors can walk along the Heritage Garden located by the Welcoming Lady, which showcases plants and vegetation native to the Cannon Beach area and a part of the Clatsop Nehalem culture as well as a play space for children. The garden leads visitors to a natural walking trail breaking off into smaller paths running along the river. The main trail heads to an amphitheater shaped with a natural berm to host more outdoor activities and events for the public.
